Exclusive: Paul Anderson as Montgomery in Fortitude

The official trailer for Fortitude is live. With it comes a striking new chapter for Paul Anderson, who steps into the black beret of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery in Simon West’s Second World War espionage thriller. Never-Before can now reveal a first-look portfolio of Paul in the role.

A war won by making the enemy look the wrong way

Fortitude tells the extraordinary true story behind the Allied deception operation that concealed the location of the D-Day landings. At its centre are Dudley Clarke, played by Ed Skrein, and Thomas Argyll “TAR” Robertson, played by Matthew Goode. Their weapons are not artillery. They are fictitious armies, false radio traffic, dummy tanks, double agents and a story convincing enough to hold German forces around the Pas-de-Calais while the real invasion moved towards Normandy.

Directed by Simon West and written by Simon Afram, the film assembles a formidable cast. Nicolas Cage plays Dusko Popov, the real-life double agent associated with the inspiration for James Bond. Michael Sheen appears as Winston Churchill and Art Malik as Ian Fleming. The ensemble also includes Sir Ben Kingsley, Jordi Mollà, Alice Eve, Lukas Haas, Adrian Topol, Emilio Sakraya and Maeve Courtier-Lilley.

The man the enemy was watching

Montgomery was more than a senior commander. By 1944 he was one of the most recognisable soldiers in Britain. His double-badged black beret, roll-neck jumper and clipped public manner made him instantly identifiable. As commander of the 21st Army Group, he held a pivotal role in the Allied invasion of Normandy. That visibility also made him useful to a deception built around observation, assumption and misdirection.

The dramatic opportunity is rich. Fortitude places Montgomery inside rooms where confidence itself becomes a weapon. The first-look images reveal Paul playing that tension with control: perched at the edge of a desk, listening while plans take shape, or holding a room without the need for noise. It is a performance registered through posture, gaze and stillness.

Paul Anderson, in a different register

Paul’s screen power has often been associated with volatility. Montgomery asks for another register. The force is contained. The rhythm is deliberate. Rather than filling every frame, Paul lets the character’s authority alter the temperature of the room.

That contrast matters. A major historical figure can become an arrangement of familiar details, but these images suggest a person rather than an impersonation. The beret and jumper establish the silhouette. Paul’s concentration, restraint and flashes of dry certainty begin to reveal the man.

Inside the deception room

The film’s official synopsis describes Clarke and Robertson as “spy-soldiers”, an exact phrase for a story in which military success depends on theatre. The operation required each invented formation, intercepted message and double-agent report to support the same false picture. The deception continued after D-Day, helping persuade German command that Normandy might still be a diversion.

Montgomery sits at a compelling intersection in that story. He is a real commander within a film about fabricated armies, a public figure inside a secret plan, and a man whose movements could be used as evidence by people watching from afar. Paul’s scenes give the strategy a human centre.

A major next chapter

Fortitude arrives at an important point in Paul’s career. It places him inside an ambitious international ensemble while giving him a British historical figure with a completely different centre of gravity. For audiences who know the emotional combustion of Arthur Shelby, Montgomery offers a chance to see what happens when that intensity is compressed into discipline.
